About Mahjong Rules

Last reviewed:

Mahjong Rules is an independent reference site about mahjong rules, scoring and strategy, written for English-speaking players who are learning the game or moving between rule sets.

What this site is

The site explains how mahjong is played in the rule sets that are actually used at tables and online: Chinese Official, Hong Kong, Sichuan, Taiwanese, riichi, American and British. Each rule page covers the same structure — what the rules are, where players get them wrong, and what to confirm before the first hand.

Mahjong itself is a traditional public-domain game. Nobody owns the rules. This site is not affiliated with any publisher, platform, tournament body or tile manufacturer, and no third party has reviewed or endorsed its content.

How the content is written

Every page is written from primary rule descriptions and cross-checked against the way the game is played at club level. Where rule sets disagree — and they frequently do — the site states the disagreement rather than quietly picking a side. Two examples are the treatment of limit in British play and the tile count in three-player variants, both of which have more than one accepted answer.

Articles are reviewed for accuracy and updated when a rule set changes. Each page shows the date it was last reviewed, and pages that depend on an annual publication, such as the American card, say so explicitly.

What this site is not

  • Not a gambling guide. Nothing here is advice on betting, stakes or money play.
  • Not an official rulebook. If your club has a house rule, your club is the authority, not this page.
  • Not a software manual. Platform-specific behaviour changes without notice, and the site describes general rules rather than any one app's settings.

Advertising and funding

The site is supported by advertising served through Google AdSense. Ads are clearly separated from editorial content and are never placed inside an article's main text in a way that could be mistaken for part of it. Advertising has no influence on what is covered or how a rule is described. See the privacy policy for what advertising partners collect and how to control it.

Corrections and contact

If a rule is described incorrectly, the fastest way to get it fixed is to send the page address and the correction. Corrections that cite a specific rulebook or tournament regulation are handled first, because they are the easiest to verify.

Newsletter

The site offers an email list for new-guide announcements. Addresses collected there are used for that purpose only, and the form is described in the privacy policy. There is no paid tier, no sponsorship arrangement and no affiliate programme.
